Handling wet / slippery conditions

Any suggestions for swapping out the standard tyres for something that can handle puddles, mud and slippery tarmac? I've found the front tyre spins / doesn't get traction when pressure is applied to the pedals. Looking at 18 X 2.125 mountain bike tyres. Better grip and a little wider.
