Halfbike 3 - Gear Hub Adjustment
For adjusting the gear hub of your Halfbike 3 you can check this tutorial:
Move the shifter to gear number 2.
Check if the two yellow lines are aligned well. *
Rotate the shifter cable adjuster to align them.
Select gear 4 and then change back to gear 2.
Rotate the pedal cranks a full turn and then check again to ensure that the two indicator marks are still aligned.
Repeat the above steps until the yellow indicators are aligned.
* Please note that the two lines are not 100% accurate on all hubs. Some do shift better when the lines are slightly out of position and it takes a bit of experimenting to find the optimal position.
Thanks for the tip Martin.
Thank you very much Martin.

Interesting I’m going to have another go tomorrow.
Hi guys, tried several times the tutorial but althought the yellow lines are aligned, switching from second gear to third or fourth, I keep hearing a cranky noise. is there any other check/adjustment I should try? Many thanks
Hi guys,
I’ve tried to adjust the gear hub at least 50 times following the instructions on this tutorials. I tried multiple settings, leaving the lines slightly out of position or perfectly aligned, but the result is always the same: the only gear that works is second. When shifting to third, it momentarily engages, only to go back to second and make a cranky noise. Same thing happens when shifting to fourth.
I have used this half bike for about two months and only sporadically, so it has no more than 40 miles of use. It’s really frustrating to realize that I might have just wasted the $750 I spent on it because it appears the gear hub has a design flaw.
Is there anything else I can do to get the gear hub to work properly?
Regards,
Armando
Hi Armando,
Just sent you an email :) We'll o our best to help out.
Hi Javier,
Just sent you an email :)
I'm having the same exact issue. I just got my half-bike today and put it together. Without even riding it I hear this annoying noise. At first I couldn't understand what it could be. Then, after looking over this "thing" I dis-engaged the gear cable and it didn't make anymore noise. However, once I engage the gear cable back to the main wheel the damn stupid noise came back.
Do I have a defective gear hub right out of the box??????? This sucks!
Hi Wes,
Just replied to your email. You've placed your gear cable on the wrong side, that's all :)
i seem to have issue too, the 2 yellow marks are about 4mm off and i cant adjust them anymore, and when i switch to gear 3 , there is always this weird cranking sound, only gear 2 doesnt have this sound. can anyone help me>?
Hi David,

I aligned the 2 yellow lines well. But, when I ride my bike, I found that it performs best at gear 3. When I switch to gear 2, I found that it is "loose". Feel like the chain is "not connected" to the wheel intermittently. Or feel like it misses gear occasionally... hard to describe the problem. While, at gear 3, it it well connected and feel well. Any thought or recommendation?

Another question: do you have a video/ procedure on how to replace the grip?
Hi Chong,
Just sent you an email with more info/instructions :)
Hi Halfbike Team,
I have similar issue as mentioned by fellow halfbikers. 2nd gear is smooth and quiet. But the other gears are having this cranking sound during pedalling. Is there a way to align all the gears as smooth and quiet as 2nd gear?
Please advise, thanks.
Hi Halfbike Team,
Is there a way to widen the gap between the gear screw and the chain as shown at the red arrow drawn?
I realise the gap is too close and may have caused some contact between the screw and the chain during half biking and paddling too. Don't you agree?
Regards,
KH
This tutorial is lacking. Is it the left yellow notch that should be the one that moves when turning the shifter cable adjuster? Is that right? If that is right, which direction of turning makes the yellow line go up, and which makes it go down?
Добрый день. У меня стала пропадать 3-я и 4-я передача. Я настраиваю передачи, но со временем 3-я и 4-я передача снова пропадают.

I have halfbike 3 and seems my gears are all jacked. Is there someone in Raleigh, NC that can take a look at the gears for me?
Hi Jamal,
Did you try following the tutorial above? Aligning the two yellow line is very important
I did not. I know I need to take the tire off again. Just curious, is there anyone Raleigh, NC that has the bike so that I can see and compare? It would have been great to a few pictures of the cable alignment and the gears. Apparently when I put the back on, I some how installed the gear shift backwards.

My HB3 was slipping gears in 1st after the first few weeks and making a clunking sound and sometimes the pedal would slip. 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears were holding fine. My guess is the cable stretches a little from the initial weeks of riding.
The two horizontal yellow marks were offset by about 4mm. Following this guide to re-align the yellow markers appears to have fixed the gear slipping in 1st. All good for now.
Thanks! Andrew (Sydney AU)
I am having issue adjusting gears. I have followed the tutorial and the yellow marks are aligned but the bike still makes a creaking/grinding noise when pedaling.
